Ocean City, Maryland began with Isaac Coffin supplying boarding houses to fisherman in 1869. Later in 1875, the Atlantic Hotel was erected. Consequently, Ocean City became known as The Ladies Resort to the Ocean because it is connected to Chesapeake Bay through the Pokomoke River.

Ocean City provides access to the Atlantic Ocean fishing grounds. A railroad bridge was built over Sinepuxent Bay in 1876. Daniel B. Trimper started the amusement park industry in Ocean City. Captaian Christopher Ludlum is accredited with founding Ocean City’s pound fishing industry. Ocean City’s Boardwalk took fifteen years to complete, 1900 to 1915. A 1933 storm introduced Ocean City to sportfishing. The first white marlin was caught in 1934.

In 1952, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was erected. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was finished in 1964. Today, Ocean City, Maryland celebrates Springfest, Jamboree in the Park, Greek Festival and Labor Day Weekend. Other annual events are Sunfest Kite Festival, Winefest on the Beach, Oktoberfest, and Fall Fest of Fine Art and Christmas Craft Expo. Ocean City also enjoys the festivities during Winterfest Tree Lighting and its New Year’s Eve Family Celebration. Kids enjoy the Ocean City Easter Kids’ Fair.
